     - Janko Tipsarevic and Nicolas Mahut make their Toronto 2008 debut on Monday as the two big servers clash in the opening round.

Nicolas Mahut likes to play on fast surfaces; his serve is undoubtedly his biggest weapon and he generally uses it to great effect on hard courts and grass. His results in 2008 however, seem to indicate that he is having difficulty even on his best surfaces. He made the finals of the Queens Club tournament in 2007, but only reached the quarterfinals this year. More alarming than that was his first round loss in Indianapolis to Gilles Simon. He comes into The Rogers Cup with shaky confidence.

Janko Tipsarevic has notched a few impressive results this year. Most recently, he made the round of 16 at Wimbledon, where he lost a tough match to Germany’s Rainer Schuettler. Earlier in the year, he made the quarterfinals at the Masters event in Miami, eventually going down to Nikolay Davydenko.

Expect the two men to go after as many first serves as they can muster. They both have an intimidating first serve which wins them many free points. Tipsarevic is better off the ground, as evidenced by his ranking of 45 (Mahut has dropped to 95 in the world). Although the set scorelines will likely be close, expect Tipsarevic to pull out the win.
