Up and coming Latvian Ernests Gulbis will test his mettle against Argentine clay courter Jose Acasuso in the opening round of the Roger’s Cup in Toronto on Monday.
Ernests Gulbis is having his come-out year in 2008. He progressed all the way to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros where he went out to Novak Djokovic in a tight three setter. A month later, he battled Rafael Nadal in a great match in the second round at Wimbledon. Gulbis took the first set from the Wimbledon champion before falling in four.
Acasuso’s year has not been as impressive as his opponent’s. Leading up to his quarterfinal appearance in Amersfoort last week, he had not made it out of the second round since the Masters-Series event in Miami. This includes a string of poor results on clay, which is his preferred surface. He will very likely have difficulty handling Gulbis’ big game - especially on the quicker surface in Toronto. This match should go comfortably to Gulbis. The Latvian in two.

Did you know that... James Blake was named Rookie of the Year for the World Team Tennis season in 2000.

I have never seen anything like it. And never will ever again. This match was the most shocking, disgusting, and horrific sight I have ever witnessed. I am writing an entire blog about it in the very near future.
