Spaniards Carlos Moya and Fernando Verdasco took the court on Friday in the quarterfinals in Umag.
Fernando Verdasco def. Mischa Zverev 7-5, 7-5
Number one seed Fernando Verdasco had a more difficult time than expected with German Mischa Zverev. Zverev hung with the Spaniard for the better part of both sets. The two men traded breaks of serve in the first set, but Verdasco just eeked out the set-deciding break just when a tiebreak seemed likely. The second set played nearly identically to the first. A break for each man had the set level to the very last games of the second set. Verdasco played some clutch tennis to seal the match in straights.
Fabio Fognini def. Carlos Moya 6-4, 6-3
Spaniard Carlos Moya’s woes continued on Friday with a straight set loss to Italy’s Fabio Fognini. In particular, his serve completely deserted him. He served at a shocking at a shocking 36% for the match. The serving has been plaguing Moya for the past couple months. Except for a quarterfinal result in Hamburg, Moya’s spring has been a series of mostly first and second round losses. Fognini needed only to play solid tennis to pocket the win.
