For the first time since this Indianapolis event moved to hard courts in 1988, the top four seeds have all reached the semifinals. James Blake, Dmitry Tursunov, and Sam Querrey join Gilles Simon.
James Blake d. Yen-Hsun Lu 6-2, 6-0
The No. 1 seed demolished Lu in a mere 44 minutes on Friday. Blake lost only seven points on serve in the entire match, including none when he put in 20 first serves, and never faced a break point. He lost just nine points in the six games of set two. It was hard-court clinic from Blake not only on his own serve, but also in the return game. He jumped all over Lu's modest serves to the tune of winning 62 percent of his opponent's first-serve points. Next up for the American is Dmitry Tursunov.
Dmitry Tursunov d. Paul Capdeville 3-6, 6-3, 6-1
The unseeded Capdeville took it right to Tursunov in the opening set and appeared to be in control of the match until 3-3 in the second frame of play. That's when the No. 3 seed broke serve for the first time and he promptly broke again with Capdeville serving to stay in the set at 3-5. The Chilean then faded in the final set, dropping the first five games before finally holding serve at 0-5. Tursunov, who lost just five points in his last four service games, closed out the match in routine fashion.
Sam Querrey d. Bobby Reynolds 6-1, 3-6, 6-3
Querrey fired 17 aces in this back-and-forth affair. He put in 75 percent of his first serves to help him recover from being down 2-1 and a break in the third set. The No. 4 seed broke back immediately to level the final frame of play at 2-2 and never looked back. “I stuck with it and fought hard and he eventually made a few errors in the third,” said Querrey. “I thought I picked up my game a little bit and served better.” Second-seeded Gilles Simon awaits Querrey in the semifinals.
