Fabio Fognini (7)def. Filippo Volandri 6-4, 6-4
Filippo Volandri’s season continued it’s steep decline on Wednesday when he lost to countryman Fabio Fognini. Volandri was defending quarterfinal points from 2007. Fognini was able to win in straight sets, but both men were vulnerable on serve. There were eight breaks of serve in the match. Fognini managed to hold one more time than Volandri in both sets they played. Fognini is into his fourth clay tournament quarterfinal for the year. He will play Spaniard Carlos Moya.
Fernando Verdasco (1) def. Mathieu Montcourt 7-6(5), 6-1
The tournament number one seed rolled through his opening match in Umag in straight sets. Spain’s Fernando Verdasco had difficulty with Frenchman Mathieu Montcourt in the first set. The men traded breaks of serve three times before the set was decided in a tiebreak. Verdasco’s experience paid off, and he took the breaker at five. Montcourt’s serve completely abandoned him in the second set. He failed to hold serve a single time - the one game he won came on a break of Verdasco’s serve. The Spaniards quarterfinal opponent will be Mischa Zverev.
Mischa Zverev def. Marcos Daniel (8) 6-4, 6-2
The number eight seed Marcos Daniel was easily dispatched in straight sets by Russian Mischa Zverev. Zverev was solid on serve - he did not face a single break point in the match. Daniel was only 3 for 27 on Zverev’s first serves. Daniel got eight opportunities on the Russian’s serve and converted three of them. Zverev will have the task of playing the tournament number one seed Fernando Verdasco in the quarterfinals.
