  • Umag - Day four preview

    7/17/08 4:06 AM | Cheryl Murray
     - Two Croats take the court on Thursday in Umag's Croatia Open.

    Ivo Karlovic vs. Maximo Gonzalez

The big serving Croat Ivo Karlovic will take on Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina in front of the home crowd. Karlovic is best known for his booming serve, a shot that is at it’s most effective on fast surfaces, not usually clay. He had made the round of 16 in Hamburg and Rome however. Maximo Gonzalez is ranked just outside the top 100 (101 in the world). He gains most of his ranking points on the Challenger circuit. His ATP record coming into the tournament was 1-3 for the year. Gonzalez has had good success on the dirt this year - he might just give Karlovic a hard time.

    Ivan Ljubicic vs. Roko Karanusic

Former world number three Ivan Ljubicic will continue on his quest for his first title of the year. His ranking has slipped to 38 in the world, but his game is always dangerous with his big serve and forehand. Roko Karanusic is another mostly Challenger event player. He has struggled of late; his best result in the past couple of months was a quarterfinal appearance at the Challenger in Zagreb. Ljubicic can most likely look forward to a quarterfinal berth as it is highly unlikely that Karanusic will be able to muster enough game to take out the Croat.
