In the wake of perhaps the greatest Wimbledon final ever played, two of the main protagonists of past All England club title thrillers are touting their seniors showdown in London later this year.
Goran Ivanisevic player profile" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #000;">Goran Ivanisevic, who finally lifted the trophy in rainy 2001 over Patrick Rafter after losing finals to Pete Sampras in 1994 and 1998, has vowed to take his revenge against the American whom he accuses of wrecking his life on court.
“This guy destroyed my life”, said the colourful Croatian of the man who kept him from a No. 1 ranking throughout his career. He cites a five-set defeat in the 1998 Wimbledon final as one of his worst losses.
“I've had some bad moments when I've been sick or somebody died but, for me, this was the worst thing ever. I should have beaten him. It was great to play in the same generation as him”.
“I beat him many times - but not when it was important”.
Sampras, whose all-time record of 14 Grand Slam titles in under threat by Roger Federer with 12, will be playing in London at the senior event from December 2-7 for the first time since a 2002 Wimbledon loss.
“Goran was my rival at Wimbledon for so many years and I was someone that gave him some trouble there”, said Sampras. “He could have won a few more titles if I wasn't around”.
