  • Indianapolis Day 2 Recap

    7/16/08 5:46 AM | Ricky Dimon
Indianapolis Day 2 Recap John Isner and Vince Spadea won all-American affairs on Tuesday against Robert Kendrick and Donald Young, respectively. They are joined in the second round by No. 5 seed Tommy Haas.

    John Isner d. Robert Kendrick 7-5, 6-3

Not surprisingly, this battle between big-serving Americans all came down to the serve. Both players won less than half of their second-serve points, so putting in first deliveries became imperative almost right from the start. Isner ended up doing a better job of that, serving at 66 percent while Kendrick made 57 percent of his first offerings. Two other key stats turned out to be aces and break points saved. Isner blasted a whopping 23 aces to his opponent's nine, and Isner also saved all 11 break points he faced. The big man moves on to face Tommy Haas, whom Isner defeated in Washington D.C. last year and in San Jose this year.

    Vince Spadea vs. Donald Young

Overall it was a rather listless performance by Young, who is clearly still in the learning process on the ATP Tour. The 18-year-old failed to win a single point when his elder American patriot made his first serve. Spadea lost just nine total points on serve and he never faced a break point. In round two Spadea will meet another up-and-coming American in 20-year-old Sam Querrey.

    (5) Tommy Haas vs. Jesse Levine

For the most part Americans fared OK in round one, but Levine faced the toughest test of them all and Haas proved to be just too much. The German dropped serve once in the opening set, but he played a stellar tiebreaker and never got broken again. Levine just did not do enough with Haas' second deliveries and he was almost hopeless when he had to toss in a second serve of his own. “It's always difficult when you play each other for the first time in a match,” said Haas. “We've known each other for quite a long time and we practice together once in a while, but a match is a totally different story.”

Among the other Americans who triumphed on Monday were Rajeev Ram, Wayne Odesnik, and Bobby Reynolds. Ram upset Newport champion Fabrice Santoro in straight sets.
