Even in Wimbledon defeat, Roger Federer insists that a possible Beijing Olympic gold medal next month cannot help him salvage a season which is so far minus a coveted Grand Slam title.
“You're going to be judged on the Grand Slams you win and No. 1s”, said the Swiss, beaten in the most dramatic Wimbledon final in history in five sets by Rafael Nadal.
The Swiss, who holes to carry his nation's flag when the Games open in three weeks on his 27th birthday, August 8, said that the classic tennis majors will always mean more in the grand scope of the game.
“The Olympics are a new thing to tennis”, he said of the sport which only returned to the Olympic fold two decades ago in Seoul. “Maybe in 50 years' time it will also become one of the big tournaments to win”.
“But for me, and maybe some players and some fans need more convincing that the Olympics is big for tennis”.
Federer beat Nikolay Davydenko in Athens four years ago before losing to Czech Tomas Berdych in a defeate which still haunts the 12-time Grand Slam champion.
“I'm going to try and win the Olympics and the US Open and then we can talk again”, the Swiss said after his loss to Nadal at the All England club.
Federer just missed out on a medal at his first games in Sydney eight years ago.
