Andy Murray has gone missing in action Monday's start of the North American hardcourt season as he skips the Indianapolis Championships to rest for bigger events.
Organisers got a late slap in the face as the No. 9 announced non his website that he wouldn't bother to front up, preferring to to rest himself for the start in a week of the Toronto Masters.
That is followed on by the Masters in Cincinnati, where Murray beat Roger Federer in 2006 while losing in the first round a year later.
“Andy wants to take some rest and recharge his batteries before a very gruelling period including the Beijing Olympics”, a spokesman told his website.
Murray was to have made his first Indy appearance since 2005 when he won a match before losing to Mardy Fish. The field is headed by the winner form the last two years, Dmitry Tursunov (2007) and James Blake.
No. 8 Blake won the tournament two years ago over Andy Roddick, losing last year in the quarter-finals to young countryman Sam Querrey, seeded fourth at this edition. 2005 winner Robby Ginepri takes the seventh seeding.
Murray has dropped hints that he would trim his schedule, confirming at Wimbledon that he would try to stick to the big events. The Beijing Olympic only complicates scheduling matters this busy summer.
But when he does show up to play in this side of the Atlantic, Murray likes his chances on cement. “I feel more comfortable playing on the American hard courts, they are still my favorite surface to play on”.
“I've had some of my best results on those courts and the US Open's always been the one that I felt was best suited to my game”.
