    7/12/08 4:09 AM | Cheryl Murray
     - A seed goes down as Gstaad heads into the semifinals.

Stanislas Wawrinka def. Guillermo Canas 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(2)

This was a dodgy match from both players. It seemed like a continuous stream of break point chances as each man took turns dropping serve for a total of eight times. Both men secured four breaks of serve. In the end, it was Wawrinka’s clutch play in the third set tiebreak that secured that match win for the tournament number one seed. He will play Victor Hanescu for a chance to play in his third tour final this year.

Victor Hanescu def. Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 7-6(3)

Qualifier Jeremy Chardy’s run ended in the quarterfinals, taken out by the big serving Romanian Victor Hanescu. Hanescu posted a huge win over the number four seed Ivo Karlovic, and continued his impressive run on Friday with a straight set win over Jeremy Chardy. Chardy made headlines in May by advancing all the way to the round of 16 at Roland Garros. The Romanian will play number one seed Stanislas Wawrinka in the semifinal.

    Guillermo Garcia-Lopez def. Mikhail Youzhny 4-6, 7-5, 6-3

Mikhail Youzhny’s year, which started off so promisingly, has steadly gotten worse. On Friday, he lost to a player ranked 88 in the world. Most recently the #16 ranked Russian lost in a straight-sets drubbing to Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon. Youzhny has struggle on the dirt all year; this quarterfinal defeat marks his best result of the year. Garcia-Lopez enters his second semifinal of the year. He also advanced to the semis in San Jose. He will play Igor Andreev for a spot in the finals.
