  • Gstaad - Stanislas Wawrinka vs. Victor Hanescu

    7/12/08 4:27 AM | Cheryl Murray
     - Swiss number two Stanislas Wawrinka will take on the big Romanian Victor Hanescu for a chance to play in the finals.

Switzerland’s number two ranked player Stanislas Wawrinka broke into the top ten in 2008. He made the final in Rome, where he took a set off Novak Djokovic before going down in three. He also made the semifinals in Barcelona, establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with on clay. He has not shown his best tennis thus far in Gstaad, however. Should Hanescu come into the match with the same form he has enjoyed all tournament long, Wawrinka may very well be upset.

Victor Hanescu is ranked 80 in the world. He has had quite the dismal year in 2008. Before this week, he had failed to advance beyond the second round of every ATP tournament in which he’s played. He has played some impressive tennis this week. Wawrinka has certainly not played his very best tennis in Gstaad thus far. Wawrinka was pressed hard by countryman Stephane Bohli, who took him to three sets. Guillermo Canas also took the Swiss man to three sets.

Hanescu actually holds a 1-0 lifetime edge over Wawrinka, but the last time they met was back in 2004 in a Davis Cup match. Wawrinka should be able to pull out the win, but Hanescu could make it sticky for a while. Wawrinka in three.
