After a public plea from former Olympic doubles partner Nicolas Kiefer, resurgent Rainer Schuettler said he would be pleased to have another shot at a medal should he be included on the German team.
The surprise Wimbledon semi-finalist is taking a few days off in Dubai, and told the Gulf News: “It would be great to play again together in Beijing”.
Schuettler and Kiefer won Athens silver in doubles and would love to take another run at glory in Beijing from August 8.
“But I don't know the latest news if the National Olympic Committee will nominate me”, admitted the 32-year-old Schuettler. “I guess I will know more in a few weeks”.
“For me it would be a dream to be at the Olympics again”.
The German who spent several seasons dealing with injuries and illness credits his form at the Grand Slam to hard work and staying healthy enough to play consistently.
“I had not played so well for a long time, so I'm extremely happy that the hard work and the self-belief paid off. Of course, I was surprised with myself”, said the player whose ranking shot from 94 to 39 as a results of his performance.
“I'm very happy about my performance at Wimbledon. I had some health problems and I didn't play so well for a long time”, he said. “The most important thing is that I'm healthy. I didn't have any big injuries since August last year”.
