     - Wawrinka-Canas is an intriguing quarterfinal matchup. Canas will be looking to right his 2008 season, Wawrinka will be looking to continue his outstanding results.

Switzerland’s “other” player has had his breakthrough year in 2008. Stanislas Wawrinka made a clay final in Rome where he lost to Novak Djokovic and the semifinal in Barcelona. His result at Wimbledon was a respectable round of 16 loss to eventual semifinalist Marat Safin.

Wawrinka had a surprising test in the second round against Stephane Bohli. The Italian wildcard pushed took Wawrinka to three sets before going down 7-6(3) in the third. Fatigue may indeed be a factor in this quarterfinal match. The Swiss man will be playing the grinding baseliner Guillermo Canas.

Canas has a traditonal clay court game - namely he hits exclusively from the baseline and retrieves ball after ball until his opponent makes a mistake. He’s dangerous to anyone who might be tired in the least. He has not had the best clay court season in 2008. His best result ont the dirt came in Warsaw where he reached the quarterfinals. His ranking has slipped to number 54 in the world.

If Wawrinka has not recovered from his second round match, Canas will know just what to do to take advantage. Generally, however Wawrinka has too much game for the form that Canas has been showing. Wawrinka in two.
