The seeds took care of business on Thursday at the Catella Swedish Open. Among those advancing to the quarterfinals were Robin Söderling, David Ferrer, and Jarkko Nieminen.
Robin Söderling d. Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-3
Söderling never dropped serve in cruising past Rochus into the quarterfinals, much to the delight of the Bastad crowd. The Swede saved all four of the break points he faced, whereas Rochus managed to save just five of eight. Söderling's second break of the opening set gave him a lead and one loose service game by the Belgian in set two was all Söderling needed. Söderling fired 11 aces during the match and won 87 percent of his first-serve points. He will meet No. 1 seed David Ferrer on Friday.
David Ferrer d. Boris Pashanski 7-5, 6-1
The first set was a little too close for comfort, but as expected Ferrer had little trouble with Pashanski. The Spaniard's second break of serve in the first frame of play finished off the set and Ferrer rolled after that. Pashanski did not hold serve a single time in set two. Part of that was because of Ferrer's clay-court prowess, but part of it was because the Serb put in less than half of his first serves and double-faulted five times.
Jarkko Nieminen d. Steve Darcis 6-3, 6-1
Nieminen needed just 56 minutes to crush Darcis. The Finn lost only nine points on serve throughout the entire match and never faced a break point. Completely overmatched from the back of the court, Darcis won just three of 18 points when he failed to gain an advantage by putting in his first serve. Nieminen should face a much more difficult test in the quarterfinals against No. 3 seed Tommy Robredo.
