    7/10/08 9:11 PM | Cheryl Murray
     - Round two on the clay in Gstaad finished up on Thursday. In action were Jeremy Chardy and Mikhail Youzhny. Nicolas Kiefer was forced to withdraw.

Mikhail Youzhny def Flavio Cipolla 6-3, 6-2

Tournament number three seed Mikhail Youzhny got past Italy’s Flavio Cipolla in easy straight sets for a berth in the quarterfinals. This match seemed to be one endless stream of breakpoint chances. Youzhny had eleven for the match of which he converted four. Cipolla had a whopping thirteen, but he could only capitalize on one of them, and it was not nearly enough for him to make an impression on Youzhny. The Russian will play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who advanced to the quarterfinals because Nicolas Kiefer withdrew from the tournament.

Jeremy Chardy def. Dominik Meffert 6-7(1), 7-6(5), 7-6(4)

The second all-tiebreak encounter of the day (the first was Hanescu over Karlovic) saw Jeremy Chardy squeak past German Dominik Meffert. Chardy was considered the favorite going into the match. He surprised the French crowd at Roland Garros this year by making the round of 16 and giving Nicolas Almagro. Chardy relied heavily on a big first serve. He struck 19 aces over the two hours and forty-five minutes of play. The Frenchman went up a break in the third and served for the match at 5-4. Meffert was able to break back to force another tiebreak, but Chardy ultimately proved too strong.
