Richard Gasquet and Agustin Calleri fight through tough 3 setters to advance into the Quarterfinals in Stuttgart
Gasquet, looking to rebound from his disappointing loss to Murray at Wimbledon, dropped the first set against Czech qualifier Lukas Rasol, but fought back to win the last two. Richard played very passive tennis in the first set while Rasol played just about as well as he could. A tight tiebreak ensued and Rasol was able to just edge it out 9-7. In the second and third sets, however, Gasquet started playing smarter while Rasol seemed to be running out of gas. The Frenchman pulled out the last two sets 6-2 6-2 and will advance to the quarters to face Albert Montanes.
The Argentine Calleri, the 6 seed, came back from the brink against Pablo Cuevas. Cuevas had a great tournament in Vina del Mar at the start of the year but had done little to nothing in singles (won Roland Garros in doubles though) until now. Calleri dropped the first set before recovering and scraping through the second set 7-5. Cuevas, distressed at all the chances he missed in the second set, went on to tamely lose the 3rd set by a 6-1 scoreline. Calleri will face German big man Michael Berrer.
