  • Gstaad - Marin Cilic vs. Paul-Henri Mathieu

    7/9/08 5:28 AM | Cheryl Murray
     - Marin Cilic and Paul-Henri Mathieu will add another chapter to their 2008 history in this second round encounter.

These guys seem to be magnetically attracted to each other in the draw. This meeting will mark their 6th in 2008. Mathieu has the slight edge at three wins, but Cilic has won the last two. None of the matches have been easy straight set wins, so expect another tight match with fight from both players. They’ve played three times on grass, once on clay and once on hards. Mathieu seems to have the slight edge on the slower courts - he won their only clay encounter.

Mathieu is the higher ranked of the two at 16 (compared to Cilic's 32) but Cilic has had the better results in 2008. Recently, he made the round of 16 at Wimbledon where he lost to Arnaud Clement. Many thought he missed an excellent opportunity to make the quarterfinals.

The dirt tends to neutralize Cilic’s serve, which is one of his big weapons. The two played a blockbuster of a match at Wimbledon which Cilic eventually won 6-7(5) 6-3 6-4 7-6(7), but without the serve, Cilic will be vulnerable to the superior movement of Mathieu. Mathieu in another three set victory over the big Croat.
