  • Guillermo Canas off to a good start in Gstaad

    7/8/08 3:33 AM | Cheryl Murray
Guillermo Canas off to a good start in Gstaad Argentine Guillermo Canas took on the tough Czech player Ivo Minar in the first round of the Allianz Suisse Open.

Canas made some strides in salvaging his 2008 season by beating Ivo Minar on Monday. Canas’ ranking has slipped down to 54 in the world from a high of number 8 back in 2005. Since that time, he has endured a doping suspension and some injury problems.

The Argentine most recently played a Challenger event in Lugano, where he was knocked out in the quarterfinals by Olivier Patience. The loss to Patience has capped off a disappointing clay season, marked by a first round exit at Roland Garros. He was also knocked out of Wimbledon in the first round, but since Canas is known as a clay court specialist, the grass result is less surprising.

Minar made Canas work in the first set. The Argentine had six break point chances, but converted only one. Conversely, Minar took advantage of his only opportunity on Canas’ serve to push the first to a tie breaker. The two men tussled in the tie break before Canas finally sealed up the set at 11-9.

The Czech suffered a let down in the second set after coming so close to winning the first. Canas got an early break of serve and held onto it to close out the match. Canas will play Kristof Vliegen in round two.
