Germany's Nicolas Kiefer headlines play in Switzerland on Tuesday as round one at the Allianz Suisse Open.
Luis Horna vs. Jeremy Chardy
Frenchman Jeremy Chardy made some headlines just a month ago with a round of 16 result at Roland Garros. He went down to Nicolas Almagro in a tight match. He also made the final on the Challenger event in Marrakech. His opponent, Luis Horna, is a clay court veteran who comes into the match off a Challenger event win in Lugano. Horna has won the only meeting between the two on the dirt in Kitzbuhel back in 2007. Though Chardy is not an easy opponent, Horna should be able to take this in three.
Olivier Patience vs. Victor Hanescu
Romania’s Victor Hanescu has already posted a win over Olivier Patience on clay in 2008. The two men played in Estoril, Portugal with Hanescu prevailing 6-1, 7-6(2). Hanescu has not had a good season so far this year, having failed to advance past the second round in any tournament. Patience has spent a majority of his time on the Challenger circuit, where he’s enjoyed some success, but that success has not translated to the main tour. A slight edge to Hanescu. The Romanian in three.
Nicolas Kiefer vs. Gianluca Naso
Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer has had an impressive past few months. He began the 2008 season on a downward slide, but picked up his play at home in Hamburg, where he reached the quarterfinals. He carried that form into Halle (also in Germany) where he made the semis. Most recently, he made the third round at Wimbledon, losing to eventual champion Rafael Nadal. Kiefer’s opponent is Italy’s Gianluca Naso, ranked 244 in the world. The Italian has won just one ATP tour match this year. Easy pickings for the German - Kiefer in straight sets.
