  • Gstaad - Day one wrap-up

    7/8/08 4:05 AM | Cheryl Murray
     - While the world is still buzzing about Rafael Nadal's big victory at Wimbledon, there is still tennis to be played. The clay court players battled in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Igor Andreev (7) def. Marcos Daniel 7-6(9), 6-3

Igor Andreev defeated little-known Brazilian Marcos Daniel in straight sets to advance to the second round. The Russian plays his best tennis on the dirt and showed it today against a surprisingly tough opponent. Daniel had five chances to break for the match but Andreev played some outstanding clutch tennis to save all of them. Andreev, in turn, was able to break Daniel once in each set which ended up being enough to close out the match in straights.

Marin Cilic def. Josselin Ouanna 6-3, 6-4

Marin Cilic is one of the bright young stars of the men’s game. The Croat has had quite the run in the past several weeks. He made the round of 16 at Wimbledon where he lost in straight sets to Arnaud Clement. Cilic also made the semifinals in Nottingham. He continued his impressive play on Monday against the 211 ranked player Josselin Ouanna from France. Cilic played tidy tennis to defeat Ouanna in straight sets. He faced just a single breakpoint, which he was able to save. Cilic will have a far more stern test in round two when he plays tournament number two seed Paul-Henri Mathieu.

Also through were Florent Serra, who defeated Daniel Gimeno-Traver in two tie breaks and Guillermo Garcia Lopez.
