The seeds advanced again, as the most competitive section of the draw heads into round of 16 action on Monday.
Andy Murray def Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2
The last time these two players met, Tommy Haas beat Andy Murray (at Indian Wells). Not this time around. Murray came out firing in the first. He outplayed Haas more than the scoreline indicates. Murray broke early in the set and had numerous opportunities to break Haas again, but failed to convert. The Scotsman snagged the first with no further complications. The German made a match of it in the second set. He was down a break, but battled back to force a tiebreak. Murray lost focus as he sometimes does and before he could regain himself, Haas had taken the second set.
Murray was able to take advantage of Haas' level dropping off in the third and fourth sets. Credit to the young Scot for keeping his mental game together. He won the match on his third match point.
Mikhail Youzhny def Radek Stepanek 7-5, 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3
In perhaps the match of the tournament so far, Russia's Mikhail Youzhny and Radek Stepanek battled each other for nearly four and a half hours. After taking the lead from each other for the other four sets, the fifth was decided at 4-3 on Stepanek's serve. He offered up two double faults on his way to the only break of the set. He gave Youzhny the chance to serve for the match and Youzhny made no mistake. There was plenty of drama once the match was completed, with Stepanek leaving two broken racquets behind. Youzhny will have another chance at Rafael Nadal in the round of 16. He took the Spaniard to 5 sets at Wimbledon in 2007.
