  • Hewitt hoping coach Roche can help dethrone Federer

    6/29/08 1:13 PM | Johan Lindahl
     - Lleyton Hewitt hopes that some inside tips from his current mentor Tony Roche can help unravel the riddle of Roger Federer at Wimbledon.

The Australian last beat the Swiss in 2003, losing their next 11 matches. But Hewitt knows it will take more than a few tricks to score any upset even if Rochey coached Federer for a few seasons until last year.

Federer also has a huge weight riding on the match. If the top seed wins into the quarter-finals, his longtime top ATP ranking is safe. If not - and Rafael Nadal beats Mikhail Youzhny and goes onto possibly win the title - then the Spaniard would take over the elite spot.

Federer, who has not lost a match on grass in six years, remains strong in the battle for a sixth straight title at the All England club after winning his 62nd straight match on the surface he loves.

“Rochey's obviously going to know a lot”, said Hewitt, the last man to win the title before the Swiss took up residence in the trophy room. “There's no doubt about that”.

“But you've still got to go out there and execute as well, and not play into Roger's hands too much”.

After go far not dropping a set, top seed Federer remains wary of his longtime rival. “The next round will be difficult against a more experienced player. Hewitt's won Grand Slam titles. It should be an exciting match”, said Federer, last a loser on the grass to Mario Ancic in 2002.

“It's always a challenge playing Lleyton. He's a great player, a guy I really enjoy watching, as well”, he added.

Not happening. Hewitt could have every coach Federer has ever had an it wouldn't make a lick of difference.

Fed has won 11 straight against Hewitt and 20 of the last 22 sets. Federer in 3 is what is going to happen, but one (and maybe two) set will be close.
