  • Wimbledon round two: Bottom quarter recap

    6/27/08 4:23 AM | Cheryl Murray
     - Unlike the other sections of the Wimbledon main draw, Rafael Nadal’s quarter remains largely intact after round two.

Scotland’s Andy Murray needed just over an hour and a half to dispatch Belgium’s Xavier Malisse in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. Malisse could not handle the variety from Murray. Malisse feeds off pace, which Murray refused to give him. To add insult to injury, Murray had an excellent serving day. He struck 16 aces through the course of the match. Murray will next play the hard-hitting Tommy Haas.

Richard Gasquet moved through with more ease than he probably suspected. His French compatriot Sebastien Grosjean played two sets before retiring with an injury. Gasquet was winning convincingly (6-2, 6-2) when Grosjean said he could no longer continue. Gasquet will play another Frenchman, Gilles Simon in the third round.

Both Radek Stepanek and Mikhail Youzhny had to work hard to get into the third round. Stepanek was on his way to losing his match against Viktor Troicki. The Serb had Stepanek down 2 sets, but an injury began to hamper Troicki. He eventually lost in five, but all credit to the Serb for completing the match instead of retiring.

Youzhny quite simply had a bad day at the office. He was playing little known Italian Stefano Galvani. Had he been playing somebody with more experience, he would likely have been eliminated. Stepanek and Youzhny will try to tire each other out more in the next round.
