  • Mathieu and Tursunov advance as the only seeds left in the wide open 3rd Quarter

    - Paul-Henri Mathieu took out fellow Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, Tursunov beat out British hope Chris Eaton, and Marin Cilic sent 24 seed Nieminen packing.

    Chris Eaton was getting quite a bit of attention from the British press after his first round win over Boris Pashanski. The 6'6'' Brit ranked over 600 was then put on Court 1 for his match vs. Tursunov. He showed he has some game, pushing Tursunov to a tiebreak, but not much else. He has a big serve and volley game, attacking the net like Nalbandian attacks a cheeseburger. Repeatedly and without fear. This was not enough to defeat the fiery Russian, as Tursunov timed his returns to give Eaton some tough volleys, and embarrased the Brit in the baseline exchanges.

    Guillermo Garcia-Lopez took out the 19 seed Nicolas Almagro in a 5 set victory. The result isn't as surprising as is the fact that both men would probably have been in a hurry to finish to see the Spain-Russia match. Neither man is good on grass, and Almagro looked like he'd rather be anywhere else. Garcia-Lopez didn't look too into it either, but figured he might as well win if Almagro simply didn't care either way.

    Mathieu and Cilic locked up another matchup between the two, a 5th of this season and 3rd on grass, an extreme rarity. Mathieu took care of business in tidy fashion over young Jeremy Chardy of France. Chardy has got some game, but simply isn't in the state of mind of experience to pull off such an upset. Cilic has a big serve and big forehand which he used to continue Jarkko Nieminen's dreadful year. It took 5 sets, Cilic's first 5 set win of his career, and he showed great mental strength after losing many chances to win it in 4.

    Jurgen Melzer beat American Jesse Levine in a 5 set encounter. After leading 2-1 in sets, Levine seemed to tire and Melzer took immediate advantage, winning the last set at 6-1. Arnaud Clement also won, beating German Benjamin Becker.
