  • Wimbledon: Native son Murray through in straight sets

    6/25/08 3:13 AM | Cheryl Murray
     - The seeds moved safely through to the second round in the bottom quarter of the draw at the All-England Club.

Scotland's Andy Murray showed his grass-court prowess on Tuesday as he took out the veteran Frenchman Fabrice Santoro (6-3, 6-4, 7-6(5). Murray handled the slice and dice from Santoro with impressive ease. Murray played with flair and imagination over the course of the match. Murray broke at 1-1 in the first set with a nice lob on his second break point opportunity. Santoro got back into the match briefly at 2-3, when he broke Murray's serve. Murray was not daunted. He broke Santoro's next to service games to secure the set at 6-3.

Although he had a few service glitches, Murray was dominant for the most part throughout the match. Santoro worked hard to force the third set to a tiebreak, but Murray was too tough on the day. The young man from Scotland will test his skills against Belgium's Xavier Malisse in the second round.

Also through with impressive form was France's Richard Gasquet, whose backhand seems to be on fire once again. He had a surprisingly easy win over American Mardy Fish 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Fish was simply no match for the depth and speed of Gasquet's groundstrokes. The Frenchman faced just a single break point in the entire match. Gasquet made noise at last year's Wimbledon with a shocking five set win over Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals.

Joining Murray and Gasquet in the second round are Tommy Haas, Mikhail Youzhny, Ernests Gulbis and Radek Stepanek.
