Andy Murray remains confident his injured right thumb will be fine for Wimbledon after a precautionary withdrawal from the Artois Championships in London.
Murray took the decision after he woke up with pain in the digit he hurt in a third round. The Scot said he needs a few days to heal.
“I couldn't pick up my pillow, I was struggling to pick up my phone. I tried to practice, hit some balls. I could hit the ball decent, but I couldn't hit a backhand volley, and slicing was very sore.”
Murray missed Wimbledon last year with a wrist injury which kept him out for the summer. He said that doctors expect the thumb problem to clear over a few days.
“I played three competitive matches here. That's the one positive thing that I can take away from it: it's going to clear up hopefully in a few days.”
He added: “I obviously want to get some good practice in over at Wimbledon. I'll just take it day to day, see how it's feeling, make sure I don't do too much on it.
”It's one of those things where I need to get the swelling away as fast as possible. If I keep playing on it, it will just hang around and I won't be able to get rid of it.“
