Andy Murray played down fears that yesterday's withdrawal from the Queens quarters could lead to him missing Wimbledon for a second year in a row
The British no 1 struggled in treacherous conditions in his 3rd round match against Ernests Gulbis on Thursday sustaining slight injuries to his thumb, neck and groin after a succession of slips.
The most concerning injury for him was clearly the thumb and he felt facing jarring 140mph+ serves from Roddick could only make things worse.
He said “I hit a few balls this morning but I felt some pain and discomfort on my backhand and after the doctors did a scan, I decided not to risk playing.
”There is plenty of great tennis to see in the tournament and I'm very sorry if people feel let down but I think it is the sensible thing to do.
“I did not want to aggravate the injury and I am sure it will be absolutely fine for Wimbledon.”
Murray still fully intends to compete in the Boodles exhibition event which begins on Tuesday this week and features a host of world-class names
Injury has always been a part of Murray matches at Queens, 3 years ago he sustained a badly twisted ankle after a marathon battle with Thomas Johansson and last year he missed the tournament and the grass season altogether with his wrist injury
