  • Federer and Baghdatis advance in Halle

     - Top seed Roger Federer and #5 seed Marcos Baghdatis both advanced with realtive ease in Halle's Thursday action.

Roger Federer def. Jan Vacek 7-5, 6-3

As par for the course for Federer when he plays a much lower ranked player than he, someone he has never heard of before, Roger played an average at best match. He simply did what needed to be done and did not expend much energy in the process. The only part of Federer's game that was clicking was the service, as Vacek could not read it or return it for his life. He will play Baghdatis in the next round and this flimsy lackadasical play will simply not cut it. This was also his 56th straight win on grass.

Marcos Baghdatis def. Fabrice Santoro 6-4, 6-3

A confidence building win for the Cypriot as he overcame a 3-0 deficit in the first set to regain control of the match. Early on, Baghdatis was making some horrible errors and looked like he would rather be elsewhere. However, Santoro's game will never beat Baghdatis as the latter simply has too much firepower and shotmaking ability. After he righted the ship, Baghdatis dominated his service games with big serves and fast points. Santoro tried all his tricks, but Baghdatis was locked in in the second set to erase any hope the Frenchman had of a comeback.

As a side note, it appears that Peter Lundgren is now coaching Baghdatis. Lundgren is a former coach of both Roger Federer and Marat Safin.
