  • Queens Club: The seeds advance on day three

    6/11/08 10:33 PM | Cheryl Murray
     - In a full day of tennis in London, Richard Gasquet, David Nalbandian, Lleyton Hewitt and Janko Tipsarevic are among the seeds advancing to the third round.

Troubled Frenchman Richard Gasquet, has found his form after a disappointing clay season. He defeated Italian Simone Bolelli 6-3, 6-3. He played just three tournaments on the dirt. He was ousted in the third round in Monte Carlo by American Sam Querrey and in his opening round matches in both Rome and Hamburg. After such disappointments, the top ranked Frenchman made a seemingly unthinkable decision - he announced that he was not going to play at Roland Garros. He had no injury, but instead cited feeling too much pressure as the reason for withdrawal.

It seems that he is now feeling less stress. Though Simone Bolelli is not by any means a grass court expert, any win will help with Gasquet’s confidence. Except for being broken in the second set, the Frenchman’s tennis was solid. Gasquet actual form will be tested by his next opponent. He’ll play tournament dark horse Mario Ancic.

The fourth seed, David Nalbandian also advanced in straight sets as he dispatched Viktor Troicki 6-4, 7-6(4). Nalbandian will play the wily Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in the third round. Joining the rest of the seeds in the third round were 11 seed Lleyton Hewitt, who had an impressive win over Belgian Xavier Malisse and 13 seed Janko Tipsarevic, who needed three sets to defeat Ivo Minar.
