David Nalbandian vs. Viktor Troicki
Number four ranked David Nalbandian of Argentina should be the hands down favorite in this second round match-up. The Argentine is ridiculously talented - and equally inconsistent. He was knocked out of Roland Garros in the second round by 145 ranked Jeremy Chardy, proving that on any given day he is at risk of losing even to players outside the top 100.
Viktor Troicki is a promising young Serb, but he still struggles with results at the ATP tour level. He performs well in Challenger events and is just making his first forays onto the professional cicuit. Nalbandian should be able to win this one - the Argentine in two.
Lleyton Hewitt vs. Xavier Malisse
Lleyton Hewitt is a four time champion of Queens Club and a former Wimbledon champion, but even his grass form is not what it once was. He dispatched wildcard Josh Goodall in straight sets in the first round, but not as easily as one might expect. He spent a good portion of 2008 so far out with a hip injury, making his return to the tour just in time to play at the French Open, where he lost a five setter to David Ferrer. Xavier Malisse is a dangerous player, especially on fast surfaces. He has difficulty with consistency, but when he is on, he is difficult to beat. He demolished wildcard Daniel Evans 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. Malisse might just pull off the big upset if he can stay mentally strong. Malisse in three.
Richard Gasquet vs. Simone Bolelli
The big news on Frenchman Richard Gasquet is his decision not to play in the French Open. He had no injury, but claimed that he was under too much pressure. Gasquet has had a tumultuous relationship with the French fans and press, at times delighting but often just frustrating them. Prior to the French Open, Gasquet played a terrible match against Andreas Seppi in Hamburg. He was ousted in easy straight sets in the second round. He comes into this tournament mentally fragile. The Italian Bolelli, who who got a free pass into the second round, may get lucky again. If Gasquet has not worked out his demons, Bolelli could well pull off the upset.
