  • Richard Gasquet to miss Beijing in favour of US Open preparation

    6/10/08 1:06 PM | Johan Lindahl
     - World No. 9 Richard Gasquet has joined fellow Top 10 player Andy Roddick in planning to miss the Beijing Olympics in August to concentrate on the US Open.

The off-the-boil French No. 1 continued the quiet exodus from the Games tournament. In addition to Roddick and fellow American Mardy Fish and German Tommy Haas have said they won't bother turning up in China.

By contrast, the world top three of Roger Federer, four-time Roland Garros winner Rafael Nadal and Serb Novak Djokovic are all eager at this point to participate.

Gasquet likely has more important things on his mind as he tries to rescue his game after winning just one match on clay this spring and pulling from the French Open with knee trouble.

The US Open, final major of the season, begins in New York on August 25, the day after the China final.

“In agreement with his coach Guillaume Peyre, Richard Gasquet announces that he will not participate in the Olympics in Beijing”, read a statement from Gasquet's management.
