In what could be the most interesting first round match-up, Feliciano Lopez will take on last year's finalist Nicolas Mahut.
Nicolas Mahut shocked fans and organizers by advancing to the final of Queen's Club last year. On his path to the final, he dispatched of an impressive list of players, including Ivan Ljubicic, Jonas Bjorkman and Rafael Nadal. Perhaps most impressive of all is the fact that he pushed Andy Roddick, one of the finest grass courters in the world, to the very limit. Roddick won with a score of 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(2).
Mahut's first round opponent is Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Generally, Spaniards are clay-courters who prefer to grind out wins on the baseline. Lopez is the exception to that rule. He is a big server and prefers hard courts over clay. He is not an easy first round opponent for Mahut. Except for a run to the final in Dubai, Lopez has not had a great year so far. This is not uncommon for the Spaniard, however. He plays his best tennis in the second half of the year.
If Mahut serves well, he should be able to win the match, but a Lopez win would not be a complete surprise. Mahut in three.
