  • ATP Queens: day 3 previews

    6/10/08 11:29 PM | David Cox
     - Can Rafa Nadal break his quarter-final duck at Queens ? He starts his quest against Jonas Bjorkman

    Rafael Nadal vs Jonas Bjorkman

As usual the indefatigable Nadal comes straight from the Roland Garros final though this year he’ll have expended less energy than usual. Its an ominous sign for the Queens field, Nadal at his best could take Wimbledon this year. In the past 2 years Nadal has simply ran out of steam after 2 matches in this tournament. At 36 Bjorkman is the oldest competitor in this year’s field and made the Wimbledon semis two years ago aswell as holding multiple Nottingham titles. However he’s nowhere near that vein of form right now and struggled past Kunitsyn 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 in round 1. He’s yet to play Nadal and is unlikely to be asking for more after tomorrow

    Fernando Gonzalez vs Marat Safin

When Gonzalez and Safin lock horns its always going to be entertaining - two of the most destructive characters in the men’s game. They have quite a history, Safin winning the first two matches but in recent years it’s been all Gonzalez and he leads 5-2, most notably coming from 2 sets to love down to win 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in Wimbledon 2006 and enjoying straight sets victories in last year’s Davis Cup and Munich last month. Gonzalez is certainly the more comfortable on grass even though he’s really unachieved at Wimbledon with just the one quarter-final appearance (2005). Both players faced British wildcards in round 1 here but Gonzalez looked much more comfortable in overcoming Richard Bloomfield 7-6, 6-3 while Safin looked as if he didn’t want to be on court at times against James Ward and was pushed in a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win

    Prediction: Gonzalez in 3
