  • Hewitt, Tipsarevic and Cilic kick off the tournament at Queens Club

    6/9/08 2:00 AM | Cheryl Murray
Hewitt, Tipsarevic and Cilic kick off the tournament at Queens Club The start to the short grass season starts on Monday as the field takes the court at the Artois Championships.

    Lleyton Hewitt vs. Joshua Goodall

Lleyton Hewitt has not had the 2008 season he would have wanted. He was forced to sit out most of the clay season with a chronic hip problem. He decided to try his hand at Roland Garros, where he reached the third round before going down to Spaniard David Ferrer. Provided Hewitt is healthy, he has the kind of game that could really make some noise at Queens Club. Wildcard Joshua Goodall has never won an ATP match. His ranking points are accrued mostly on the Futures tour and his ranking has slipped from a career high of 205 to 274 in the world. Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets.

    Janko Tipsarevic vs. Ivan Navarro

Number 13 seed Janko Tipsarevic comes off a relatively poor clay court season to try his luck on the grass of the Artois Championships. His best result of the year so far came on the slow hard courts of Miami, where he lost in the quarterfinals to Nikolay Davydenko. The grass at Queens Club is quite fast, which will likely pose problems for Tipsarevic's game. In 2007, the Serb was ousted in the second round by Fernando Gonzalez. His opponent in the 120 ranked Spaniard, Ivan Navarro. Navarro amasses most of his ranking points on the Challenger tour. Like most Spaniards, Navarro's preferred surface is clay. Despite his preference of slower surfaces, Tipsarevic should win comfortably.

    Marin Cilic vs. Jurgen Melzer

Croatia's Marin Cilic had an excellent start to the 2008 season. After a semifinal appearance in Chennai and a round of sixteen result at the Australian Open, Cilic's ranking rose to a career high 39. Since then, he has had a series of poor results and his ranking has dropped back to 53. He now has a win loss record of 12-13 for the year. Jurgen Melzer, the left hander from Austria, is struggling this year. His win-loss record is 8-12 and he has actually played a handful of Challenger events. The Croat, for all that he is on a current down-swing, has had the better form this year. Cilic in straight sets.
