LTA covered courts come to the rain rescue Covered hardcourts at the National Tennis Centre in London have saved the day for the first minor grass-court event of the season due to torrential rains this week which rendered the water-logged Surbiton Challenger lawns unplayable.

The minor event near London gives player who lose early at the French Open the chance to get their feet wet - so to speak - on the grass.

But due to the deluge, the the first two days of play were moved indoors to the $78 million national facility in Roehampton, South London.

While rain is as much a part of the one-month grass season as are Wimbledon's traditional strawberries and creme, this year's precipitation was just too much, too soon.

And the much maligned Lawn Tennis Federation ended up smelling of roses as their covered courts came to the rescue.

On the first day, 26 matches were moved indoors, including that of former Australian Open finalist and top seed Marcos Baghdatis, coached now by Peter Lundgren player profile" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #000;">Peter Lundgren, until two months ago working with the LTA and quite familiar with the tennis centre from his days in the bureaucracy.
