From his victory dance to his post-match attire, fireball French youngster Gael Monfils has the American look down cold.
The gangling 21-year-old who stands 1.93 metres has the look of a basketball player and the tastes of a rapper.
He came to press wearing a football shirt form a small Miami club, apparently one of his favourites. Like the NBA-star son of former Roland Garros champion Yannick Noah, Monfils has an affinity for North American games.
“I like all the American teams”, he said after insuring the host nation a place in the quarter-finals of the French Open to next face Spain's David Ferrer. “Hockey, basketball, but not so much baseball. I really like American sports”.
Monfils has apparently picked up a bit more cross-cultural bias. His celebration on court after beating Ivan Ljubicic came straight from a No. 1 rap single.
“It was a special dance, from Soulja Boy,” said the dread-locked Frenchman. “It's a dance he does, and the (No. 1) song is called Crank That”.
