Fans of stellar baseline play will be excited for this one. Hewitt the defensive counterpuncher that can run all day vs. Ferrer the aggresive solid baseliner that also can run all day.
In this particular matchup, Ferrer should win it.
But it won't be easy.
Hewitt has a tendency, especially on clay, to make his opponents work as hard as they possibly can to get a win off him. In the Aussie's Roland Garros career, he has only lost to stellar clay courters. Nadal twice, Gaudio the year he won the event, Robredo in a 5 setter, Canas in a 4 set thriler, Ferrero in 01 when he was a god on clay, and Costa the previous year.
Ferrer would fit in well. This is Hewitt's first tournament on clay all year battling that hip injury. The Spaniard is arguably a top 4-5 favorite to win this event and has been playing as such. He demolished the old Santoro in the previous round and has looked good. Hewitt has beaten Mahut and Fish, not exactly clay immortals.
The match itself will go as such. Ferrer will employ his controlled aggresion baseline game combined with his stellar speed to take it to Hewitt. If Ferrer ever gets into trouble, his fine foot speed and defensive prowess should get him back into the point. Hewitt will camp out in the back, trying to use angles to his advantages and hoping Ferrer comes to the net. Lleyton loves a target for a fine passing shot or an aggresive lob.
Ferrer in 4 tough ones seems to be the most likely scenario.
