Richard Gasquet hopes that treatment on a blocked knee which forced him from the French Open will allow him back on court in time for Wimbledon.
The 21-year-old dealt another body blow to local hopes at Roland Garros after pulling out before his match a day after Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga quit the event to have knee surgery.
Gasquet will take an injection to reduce the swelling of a cyst first discovered in December.
Tournament doctor Bernard Montalvan said Gasquet is unable to flex his knee and went on a course of painkillers and therapy in a futile effort to take to the court in Paris.
“I don't think it's serious, but I would say that he will get a controlled injection in order to reduce the cyst,” said the medico. “His knee is blocked. Basically he couldn't flex the knee and it is painful”.
Gasquet said organisers denied him a requested Tuesday start, leaving him no chance but to quit. “I tried my best to go on the court, I did a lot of things,” said a player who has gone 1-4 this clay season. “I took anti inflammatories and everything.
”I did the MRI. It was impossible for me to play. For sure I'm really sad“.
Montalvan expects Gasquet to be out of the game for up to a fortnight, perfect timing for the start of the one-mont grass season.
