  • French Open Draw

    5/23/08 6:36 PM | Ricky Dimon
     - The 2008 French Open draw is out and of course the big news is that Novak Djokovic is on Rafael Nadal's side rather than with Roger Federer. The 16 qualifiers have also been placed in the field of 128.

Novak Djokovic was placed in the second half of the field with Rafael Nadal when the French Open draw ceremony was held this morning at 11:30 AM Paris time.

That leaves Roger Federer on the same side as No. 4 seed Nikolay Davydenko, who is currently playing a semifinal match in Poertschach, Austria. Also to Federer's advantage is that the second-highest seeded player in his own quarter is No. 8 seed Richard Gasquet. The slumping Frenchman has almost no realistic shot of making it to the quarterfinals, so potential quarterfinal opponents for the world No. 1 include ninth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka, No. 24 Fernando Gonzalez, and No. 27 Igor Andreev. Federer could meet Poertschach finalist Juan Monaco in round four.

While Nadal will probably see Djokovic in the semifinals, the first part of his draw is not unkind. The Spaniard did, however, draw arguably the most dangerous of all qualifiers in Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, but the most imposing player he could meet prior to the fourth round is unseeded compatriot Feliciano Lopez. That is hardly a tall order. Things could get a bit trickier in the quarterfinals with potential opponents that include No. 6 seed David Nalbandian and No. 19 Nicolas Almagro.

Djokovic could be tested right away having drawn Barcelona semifinalist Denis Gremelmayr in the opener. The Serb also could get 29th-seeded Guillermo Canas in round three and No. 16 seed Carlos Moya in the fourth round. No potential quarterfinal opponent looks too tough, as James Blake and Tomas Berdych are the top seed in the other half of the third quarter.

The draw can be found at the official website of the 2008 French Open.

Fortunately for Nadal, I don't see Dahveed making it through the quarters.

a healthy Almagro would be a far tougher quarterfinal opponent for Nadal anyway
