  • Poertschach Second Round Recap

    5/22/08 7:16 PM | Ricky Dimon
     - Andreas Seppi, Robby Ginepri, and Austrian favorite Jurgen Melzer have two matches to play on Thursday in Poertschach. That's because all three advanced to the quarterfinals during a full slate of action.

    Andreas Seppi d. Dudi Sela 7-5, 6-1

Seppi, coming off one of the best weeks of his career in which he reached the semifinals at the Masters Series Hamburg, continued his fine form with a routine straight-set win over Sela. The first set, however, remained close for a long time as neither player could break serve throughout the first ten games. The Italian finally capitalized on a break chance at 5-5 and closed out the set on his next service game. From there Seppi never looked back, controlling the second frame of play decisively. For the match Seppi saved all nine break points he faced against his own serve.

    Robby Ginepri d. Olivier Rochus 4-6, 6-2, 6-3

Losing this one would have been a big disappointment for Ginepri, having just pulled off a much bigger scalp of seventh-seeded Mario Ancic in the opening round. For a while, however, it looked like the American would do just that. Ginepri dropped the opening set only to rally in impressive fashion, sending Rochus home in three sets. The major difference in the final frame of play was that Ginepri capitalized on both of his break-point opportunities while saving a whopping 10 of the 11 break chances he faced.

    Jurgen Melzer d. Robin Haase 6-3, 4-6, 6-2

Birthday boy Melzer, who turned 27 today, thrilled his hometown Austrian crowd with huge three-set win over eighth-seeded Robin Haase. He was presented with a birthday cake on the court after his victory. It wasn't all fun and games for Melzer during the match, however, as he failed to close out the match in set two after taking the opening frame of play. Energized by the fans, Melzer bounced back to dominate the deciding set. Haase's serve deteriorated in both percentage and effectiveness as the unseeded Melzer broke twice. Melzer, meanwhile, lost just four points on his own serve over the final eight games of the match.

In other second-round contests, No. 2 seed Juan Monaco took care of Jiri Vanek in straight sets and Igor Kunitsyn destroyed qualifier Blaz Kavcic, one day after crushing Mardy Fish.
