Due to all the rain, first-round matches were still being played in Poertschach on Wednesday. No. 2 seed Juan Monaco breezed through, Mardy Fish shouldn't have bothered showing up, and Robin Haase survived a tough two-setter
Juan Monaco d. Carlos Berlocq 4-1, retired
As if the defending champion needed any help, nobody had it any easier than Monaco in the Poertschach first round. Berlocq retired after just five games with an apparent upper leg injury, propelling the second-seeded Monaco into the second round. Monaco was leading 4-2--up two breaks of serve--and lost a total of just eight points when it ended. The Argentine should also not have much trouble with Jiri Vanek in round two.
Igor Kunitsyn d. Mardy Fish 6-1, 6-1
There was a reason why this so-called upset was not hard to pick. Fish has never played well on clay and he was positively atrocious on the surface against Kunitsyn. The American won exactly one-third of the total points played (25 of 75). He also took a mere 11 points against Kunitsyn's serve and not once did he enjoy a break-point opportunity. With his normally-big serve always having a much smaller impact on the slow stuff, Fish dug himself into an even bigger hole by putting in only 46 percent of his first deliveries. Kunitsyn merely had to keep balls in play, and he might not have to much more than that against little-known qualifier Blaz Kavcic in the second round.
Robin Haase d. Sergio Roitman 7-6(7), 6-4
Haase showed off the powerful game that he can produce despite a tall but lanky frame (6'3'', 158 pounds). Most importantly, however, the 21-year-old showed he can come up in the clutch, winning most of the key points in his straight-set win over Roitman. Haase saved one set point in the opener en route to taking it 9-7 in a tiebreaker. He also converted three of seven break points, including two in the second set that helped him overcome one poor service game. Haase fired eight aces throughout the proceedings; six in the final frame of play alone. The Dutchman advances to face Jurgen Melzer in front of a pro-Austrian crowd on Thursday.
