Younes El Aynaoui has been a regular in his home ATP for most of the last 18 years and 15 years after making a first Casablanca final he’s into the quarter-finals yet again with a 6-3, 7-5 win over previous nemesis Domnik Hrbaty
El Aynaoui used all his experience on the big points, being particularly clinical in converting 5/6 break point chances. Hrbaty didn’t help his cause with 7 double faults and won just 24% second serve points. The Slovak (a former top 15) has been in dire form since last summer, one of the worst slumps of his career and he’s been even struggling to win matches at challenger level
Guillermo Coria put in a confidence-boosting performance against 4th seed Marc Gicquel, pushing the Frenchman all the way. Coria heard last week that he’ll receive a wildcard into the French Open and going by today’s performance, he could win some matches with the right draw. Coria returned extremely well and dominated set 2 but overall he didn’t take enough chances on the Gicquel serve, only converting 3/9 break points.
Gilles Simon came through his second 3 setter of the tournament after upsetting 7th seed Florent Serra on Monday. This time he had to come from behind against Serbia’s Boris Pashanski, an opponent who’s always given him problems in the past. Simon also made the quarters here as a qualifier back in 2005 but that time it was as far as he got. He’ll be hoping it isn’t a similar story in Thursday’s last 8 clashes
