  • Davydenko Leads Charge into Poertschach Second Round

    5/19/08 6:19 PM | Ricky Dimon
Davydenko Leads Charge into Poertschach Second Round Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko makes quick work of his first-round opponent in Poertschach, Austria on Monday. He will be joined in the second round by Andreas Seppi and Jurgen Melzer.

    Nikolay Davydenko d. Rainer Eitzinger 6-1, 6-1

On paper top-seeded and fourth-ranked Nikolay Davydenko against 263rd-ranked Rainer Eitzinger was a mismatch. That's exactly how it turned out on the court as well. Davydenko crushed the Austrian wild card 6-1, 6-1 in just 58 minutes to move on to round two, where he will face either John Isner or qualifier Simone Vagnozzi. This contest was a complete mismatch from the baseline and Eitzinger won a mere one-third of the points played (30 of 90). He also managed to win only four of his 13 second-serve points.

    Jurgen Melzer d. Donald Young 7-5, 6-2

Melzer gave his hometown fans something to cheer about with a comfortable straight-set win over the 18-year-old American. The two players traded a pair of breaks in the opening set including once when Melzer tried to serve it out, but Melzer gained a third break of Young and that proved to be enough. In the second frame of play the Austrian simply served too well and Young never had any real chance to get back in the match. He won just six return points in Melzer's last four service games.

    Andreas Seppi d. Ernests Gulbis 1-6, 6-4, 6-3

Seppi was coming off one of the best weeks of his career, a semifinal finish at the Masters Series Hamburg, and for a while it looked like he could not make the quick turnaround. After a first-set drubbing at the hands of Gulbis, however, Seppi turned things around and won the next two sets. The Italian was a break down in the third, but won the last five games of the match to finish off the talented but mentally-fragile Latvian. It was quite a turn of events for both players, as Gulbis lost just seven points in the entire first frame of play and dropped just one point in his first four service games.

Other winners on Monday were Ivan Navarro, Jiri Vanek, and Daniel Gimeno-Traver. Navarro defeated Vince Spadea in straight sets, Vanek outlasted wild card Martin Verkerk 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, and Gimeno-Traver rolled easily over Werner Eschauer.
