  • Munich Quarterfinal: Gonzalez vs. Safin

    - A pair of highly talented, big hitting headcases will be the order of the day in the Safin-Gonzalez quarterfinal.

    Here we have a matchup of players whose best days seem to be behind them: Safin as a two time slam champ and former #1 while Gonzalez had a miracle run in Australia in 2007 but hasn't performed since.

    Into the present day of May 2008, you have Gonzalez playing a mediocre season thus far and looking very vulnerable, especially in the previous round against Kristof Vliegen. Safin's 2005 knee injury has shelved his career since then and his movement has been garbage. He seems to be getting back into somewhat of a groove after an abysmal first few months of the season.

    Both players have huge finishing power off both wings and can smack winners from anywhere. They also both are extremely mentally fragile and could go off at any moment at the expense of the racquet. This match will come down to who will be able to hold their nerve in the crucial moments.

    They have played six times before with Gonzalez winning the last four in-a-row, including an epic five-set Wimbledon encounter. Expect the momentum pendulum to swing back and forth in this match with the winner a true toss-up.
