  • Injury-prone Hewitt pulls from Rome

    5/2/08 6:12 PM | Mattias Yrgård
     - The injury jinx which has kept Lleyton Hewitt out of Rome for three of the past six editions will leave the Aussie an absentee again next week at the Foro Italico.

Australian media report that the former No. 1 is still fighting through pain in his left hip and has pulled from what would have been his 2008 debut on clay.

Hewitt has never been past the third round in Rome, losing in his first match last year before reaching a surprise semi-final in Hamburg a week later.

Injuries and niggles have become a way of life for the 27-year-old, whose ranking is set to plunge out of the Top 30 within weeks if he doesn't start to earn points.

Hewitt picked up his latest problems in March at Indian Wells on cement. His French Open fitness is now under scrutiny, with the Hewitt camp said to be hoping for a clay debut at Hamburg, now little more than a week away.

Hewitt, currently 20th, has been receiving treatment for his problem at home in Sydney. His only recent tennis came in a Davis Cup when he led Australia past Thailand in a playoff tie.
