    - It was a predictably one-sided start for 2nd seed David Ferrer who took just 50 minutes in the morning sun against qualifier Gabriel Trujillo-Soler

    It never looked like being a contest and it ended up as Ferrer just simply showcasing his skills in front of an appreciate home crowd during the 6-1, 6-1 rout in which he conceded a mere 10 points on serve. To his credit, Trujillo-Soler did show some good touch around the net at times but Ferrer is among the fastest players on tour and it takes something special to get a dropshot past him.

    “It was a good start to the tournament,” Ferrer said, “I always take things match by match and right now I’m only thinking about Lapentti, my opponent tomorrow. But it’s true that I’ve had a good start to the clay court season and that gives me a lot of confidence. It’s important to win these matches for the confidence and as clay is my best surface, I need to pick up as many points as possible on it to have a high ranking by the end of the year.”

    Stanislas Wawrinka made the Barcelona semis in 2006 and he set up a 3rd round match with David Nalbandian, beating lucky loser Yuri Schukin 6-3, 6-4.

    This is Mikhail Kukushkin’s first ATP tournament on clay but the qualifier looks well and truly at home among the elite and it surely won’t be long before he earns direct entry into these events on his ranking. He outplayed Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas 6-0, 6-4
