  • Monte Carlo Preview: Rafael Nadal vs. Juan Carlos Ferrero

     - Beating Rafael Nadal on clay has become something of a final frontier in men's tennis. He plays on the surface as though he were born and took his first steps there.

His match on Wednesday against Mario Ancic proved his capabilities yet again, reminding the tennis world why and how he won 81 straight matches on the dirt. He utterly demolished a very good opponent and more importantly, he sent a message to the rest of the field. Each year at this time, there is always talk that perhaps Rafael Nadal had lost some of his luster playing on the hard courts. It would appear that this is not so; and quite bad luck for Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Ferrero defeated a out of form Jarkko Nieminen in the second round on Wednesday in straight sets to advance to the round of sixteen. He had a disappointing result to start the clay season off in Valencia last week. He lost in the first round to Marat Safin, who then went on to lose to Robin Haase in the second round. Nadal is playing in his first clay tournament for 2008.

Nadal and Ferrero have met six times in their careers. Nadal has won five of those encounters, three on clay, two on hard courts. Ferrero's one win came at Cincinnati in 2006. Nadal should have little difficulty securing the victory. Nadal in two.
