  • Blake flies into Houston semifinals with win over Calleri

    4/19/08 6:41 PM | Jonathan Morgan
Blake flies into Houston semifinals with win over Calleri Despite the fact that Calleri is a better clay courter than Blake, James seems to have Agustin's number. He was able to beat him on clay in Dusseldorf last year in 3 sets, and now has a 3-1 head to head lead.

The first set was some high quality competetive action. Both players were playing smart, going for their winners when they could and constructing when possible. Calleri blew two break points on the Blake serve while James threw down 4 aces in the set. Calleri was then broken on Blake's first break point and James took the first set 6-4. Calleri at the end of the set called the trainer over to work on his left thigh. After the match, Blake commented that Calleri's movement was clearly not the same in the second.

The second set was more of the same. Blake's first set went a bit AWOL, but he still had 3 aces and lost just 5 points on his serve in the second set. Both guys were playing great clay court tennis as the crowd certainly got its money's worth. Blake was able to break on his only chance, much like the first set, as he took the second 6-3.

The match only lasted for just over an hour as the points were kept rather short by both men's attacking play.

Blake wil now contest the Houston semifinals for the 2nd straight year, having last year fallen to Mariano Zabaleta.

James Blake will face Oscar Hernandez in the semifinals.
