  • Houston Quarterfinal Lineup Set

    4/18/08 6:03 PM | Jonathan Morgan
     - With the final 8 in Houston ready to go on Friday, Mardy Fish is the only ex-champ left in the field.

    Wayne Odesnik vs. Sergio Roitman

Odesnik is not known as a clay courter. In fact, he isn't really that known for anything, aside from the hard core tennis fans. He has had a solid run here thus far to the quarterfinals, beating 6th seeded Dudi Sela in a fine match in the previous round. Sergio Roitman has looked far more impressive. He took out John Isner in the first round, after being a few points away from defeat, and was in fine form yesterday, beating out Igor Kunitysn, who took out Haas in the first round. Roitman is much more comfortable on the clay than Odesnik is and should have an easy time with the American.

    Marcel Granollers-Pujol vs Marcos Daniel

Never thought we'd see this matchup in an ATP level quarterfinal. Seems more like a Challenger final. Regardless, MGP has been simply on fire this week. The #7 seed has played well all year in the challenger events and is now looking to hit the big time. This result could very well do that. Both players are playing for their first ATP semifinal, so a lot is on the line. Daniel, however, looked impressive in the previous round against Massu. The Brazilian Daniel only faced 4 break points and was not broken all match long. This one can go either way, but MGP should win it.

    Mardy Fish vs. Oscar Hernandez

An interesting matchup here for sure, as 2006 Houston titlist Fish will go against the Spanish serve and volley tactics of King Oscar Hernandez. Oscar may not have had the best results of the year as of yet, but surely he will give the Fish a test. Mardy will look to play big in terms of serve and backhand to dictate rallies and make Hernandez do what he wants to do. Oscar will look to consistently move forward whenever he can. This contrast of styles will be fun to watch, but Fish's experience and crowd support should pull him through to the semis.
